POST 4: CHANGES TO MY STUDY PROGRAMME

In today’s blog, I will express with all of you certain proposals of changes to my study programme in Geography, as such it is renewed until today.

In the Faculty of Architecture and Planning of the University of Chile, there are three careers which are Architecture, Design and Geography. This last one, has a very complete program that includes human and physics sciences, but beyond this separation between the two principal lines of this discipline, it considers the development of many and various abilities like working thoroughly on geographical systems information (GIS), critical observation of the landscape with its human and natural components, but also the capacity of creating and identifying in a sensitive way, problematics in the territory and the potential solutions for them.

Nevertheless, the program has a big failure that deeply affects the evolutive growth of the practical abilities and parameters of analysis on-site. This vacuum has a relation with the fieldwork or field trip in some cases. Although a great majority of our physical courses have field trips, this kind of activity has not been recognized as a fundamental pillar in the career. Inasmuch as, there is no compulsory recovery of them post pandemic conditions and also they are insufficient. In my opinion, a better way to reinforce this fundamental area for the geographic discipline, may be creating a new course fully dedicated to planning and learning in fieldwork.

I hope that one day this will be a student right and not a privilege like it is today, greetings!
